Last Season
Chelsea were the almost team of last season finishing runners up in the Premier League and also in the UEFA Champions League. They were beaten by Manchester in the Champions League final. They also lost the race for the Premier League title to The Red Devils on the last day of the season. Manager Avram Grant was always going to find it hard difficult to follow Portuguese maverick Jose Mourinho. The Israeli manager was criticised for playing boring football and for not having the charisma of the Portuguese. Second place is regarded as failure to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. So Avram Grant was fired at the end of the season for his failure to win a trophy.
Chelsea were also beaten in the League Cup 2-1 by Tottenham. Chelsea fans that are used to winning never did seem to like Grant and were very quick to turn despite the team nearly winning 3 trophies. The fans were not satisfied by being the nearly men of English football neither was Abramovich. The Israeli had to be fired.
This Season
This season Chelsea are expecting to become winners again under new manager Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari. The Brazilian coach is a known winner and has claimed the World Cup with his home nation beating England on the way to the trophy. Although the coach is not fluent in English yet he is learning fast. He is famous for being a good tactician and is the complete opposite of predecessor Grant. The World cup winner is famous for speaking his own mind and not holding back.
So Chelsea fans are expecting to win trophies under Scolari and not finish second like under Grant. Scolari has signed two players he knows well from the Portugal team playmaker Deco and Full Back Jose Bosingwa. The Blues have lost influential midfielder Claude Makelele who joined Paris Saint Germain. Although the player played fewer games last season he was still considered a key player for Chelsea. The player is even regarded as the man who perfected the anchorman role. The hope for Chelsea fans is that Scolari can inspire and motivate the Blues to glory. Chelsea will probably be second favourites to win the Premier League this season and will be a big threat to Manchester Uniteds dominance.
