Last Season
Liverpool’s form last season was best described as inconsistent they were such a Jekyll and Hyde team. One week they could play fantastic and the next they could be dire. This was summed up by the number of draws at home last season. Liverpool ended up drawing 13 out of the 38 Premier League games. This was part of the reason that they were unable to challenge Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal for the league title. Last season was looked at as Liverpool’s season to challenge for the League title but instead it ended up as a battle for four with neighbours Everton. The Liverpool fans have high standards and expectations and this season was certainly a disappointment as they went out of the Champions League in the semi finals against Chelsea, as they were beaten in extra-time. One bright spot in their disappointing season was the form of new striker Fernando Torres. The Spaniard managed to score 33 goals in all competitions. He managed to register 24 in the league to make him the most prolific foreigner in a debut since Ruud Van Nistelrooy at Manchester United.
This Season
This season Liverpool will hope to mount a serious title challenge after an 18 year absence of a league title. The club are talked about as serious contenders for the Premier League every season but fans now believe that this is the Reds chance to claim the title. The Reds major signing of the summer is Irish international striker Robbie Keane for an initial fee of £18milion. The fans see his signing as the final piece of the jigsaw. The Reds are also expected to complete a £18million deal for Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry. These two players may just prove to be the difference at the end of the season.
Liverpool have also brought in Full backs Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena, goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri and young French striker David Ngog from Paris Saint Germain. The Liverpool fans will be looking forward to the new season with relish and hope their side can improve on last season’s performances in the league and also in Europe. The Liverpool fans will also hope that the boardroom situation stays stable this season.
